‘Taipa’ (タイパ): Why Young Japanese Watch Shows at 1.5x Speed

Cost performance was the old obsession. Now it’s time performance. Meet タイパ, the word that explains double-speed streaming, spoiler-first viewing and a whole generation’s relationship with time.

Picture a Tokyo commuter on a packed morning train. Headphones in, phone in hand, they’re catching up on last night’s drama — at 1.5x speed. The dialogue sounds a little like chipmunks. They don’t care. They’ll finish the episode before their stop.

Ask them why, and you might get one word: タイパ (taipa).

What タイパ means

Word to know · この単語タイパたいぱtaipatime performance — value for the time spent

タイパ is short for タイムパフォーマンス (taimu pafōmansu), “time performance.” It means how much value or satisfaction you get for the time you spend on something.

It was built on an older word every Japanese shopper knows: コスパ (kosupa), cost performance — value for money. If コスパ asks “Was it worth the money?”, タイパ asks “Was it worth the time?”

In 2022, タイパ won the grand prize in Sanseido’s “New Word of the Year” (今年の新語), chosen by dictionary editors. According to Sanseido, the word had existed for a few years, but examples of its use exploded that year, and it has since been added to Japanese dictionaries.

How people use it

Word to know · この単語コスパこすぱkosupacost performance — value for money

タイパ almost always comes with いい (good) or 悪い (bad):

  • タイパがいい — a smart use of time. “This app is タイパがいい.”
  • タイパが悪い — a waste of time. “Long meetings are タイパ悪い.”
  • タイパ重視 (taipa jūshi) — prioritizing time efficiency

It shows up in conversations about studying, cooking, shopping, travel — anything where time feels scarce.

コスパ asks if it was worth the money. タイパ asks if it was worth your life.

The 倍速 generation

Word to know · この単語倍速ばいそくbaisokudouble speed; sped-up playback

The most famous example of タイパ culture is 倍速視聴 (baisoku shichō): watching videos and shows at faster speeds. Streaming services and video apps make it easy, and many young viewers use it for dramas, anime and lectures.

Related habits include:

  • Reading spoilers first (ネタバレ, netabare) to decide whether a show is worth starting
  • Skipping openings and slow scenes
  • Watching short summaries instead of full episodes

Not everyone loves this. Some creators and older viewers argue that speeding through a story misses the point — the pauses, the silences, the atmosphere. The debate itself is a very 2020s Japanese conversation.

The four-syllable rule

Word to know · この単語効率こうりつkōritsuefficiency

タイパ is also a perfect example of a favorite Japanese word-making trick: shorten long katakana words to four syllables.

  • パーソナルコンピューター → パソコン (PC)
  • コストパフォーマンス → コスパ
  • スマートフォン → スマホ
  • タイムパフォーマンス → タイパ

Once you see the pattern, new abbreviations get much easier to guess.

Here’s a fun irony: our audio buttons on JAPAN NOW play at 1.25x speed by default. Very タイパ of us. But when you’re learning a language, slowing down is sometimes the most タイパ choice of all — tap the speed button to try 0.75x when a sentence feels too fast.
