What Is a ‘Hobiaka’ (ホビ垢)? Inside Japan’s Cute Hobby-Account Trend

Stickers, mini figures, fan goods, all arranged just so. ホビ垢 — ‘hobby accounts’ — became one of 2026’s Word of the Year nominees. Plus: why Japanese calls a social media account ‘dirt.’

Scroll through Japanese X for a few minutes and you’ll find them: photos of tiny figures lined up on a pastel desk, sticker collections arranged in neat grids, fan goods styled with lace and ribbons. Every post looks carefully, lovingly composed.

These are ホビ垢 (hobiaka), and in 2026 the word was named one of the 30 nominees for Japan’s Word of the Year.

What ホビ垢 means

Word to know · この単語ホビ垢ほびあかhobiakahobby account — a social media account dedicated to a hobby

ホビ垢 is short for ホビーアカウント, “hobby account”: a social media account built around a hobby — often fan activities — and focused on showing it off in a cute way.

According to a report from SHIBUYA109 lab., which researches youth trends, mentions of ホビ垢 among young people grew quickly over the past year. The trend is said to have grown out of a short-video genre showing cute, carefully curated everyday life, and X is described as its main stage.

Wait — why is “account” written as 垢?

Word to know · この単語垢あかaka(slang) account — literally ‘grime, dirt’

This is the fun part for learners. The kanji 垢 (aka) actually means grime or dirt — the kind you scrub off in the bath.

So why use it for “account”? Because アカウント (akaunto) starts with アカ, and 垢 is also read あか. Young Japanese users borrowed the kanji as a quick, slightly jokey stand-in. Now it’s everywhere:

  • 本垢 (hon’aka) — main account
  • 趣味垢 (shumi-aka) — hobby account
  • オタ垢 (ota-aka) — otaku/fandom account
  • 裏垢 (ura-aka) — secret or private account
  • ホビ垢 (hobiaka) — the 2026 version, focused on cute hobby displays

Only in Japanese can your social media account literally be “dirt” — and be adorable at the same time.

Why splitting accounts is so common

Word to know · この単語趣味しゅみshumihobby

Many young Japanese users run multiple accounts, each for a different side of life. Your classmates see your 本垢. Your fellow fans see your オタ垢. Your carefully styled collection lives on your ホビ垢. It’s a way to share what you love with people who get it — without exposing everything to everyone.

ホビ垢 also overlaps with 推し活 (supporting your fave): fan goods are some of the most popular things to display. Read more in our 推し活 guide. Collectibles like the sticker craze ボンドロ — another 2026 nominee — are classic ホビ垢 material too.

Words for your own ホビ垢

Word to know · この単語投稿とうこうtōkōpost (on social media); posting
  • 投稿 (tōkō) — a post
  • 載せる (noseru) — to post (a photo)
  • フォロー (forō) — follow
  • 映える (haeru) — to look great on camera (as in インスタ映え)
  • 界隈 (kaiwai) — a community or scene, like “the sticker scene”

Making a Japanese-language hobby account can actually be a great study tool: short captions, real readers, and instant feedback. Just maybe don’t become a ドパガキ in the process.
