Every October, Japanese anime fans face the same beautiful problem: too many shows. This autumn, the number is wild. According to one count, 97 titles — new series and sequels combined — started this season, and about 50 of them began in just the first five days of October.

Nobody can watch them all. So here’s a quick guide to the season’s big returning names, plus something more useful in the long run: how to read the Japanese hidden in anime titles.

The big returns

Word to know · この単語放送ほうそうhōsōbroadcast (on TV)

薬屋のひとりごと (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) — The Apothecary Diaries, Season 3

Season 3 of the palace mystery series started on October 2. The title literally means “The Apothecary’s Monologue”: 薬屋 (kusuriya) is a pharmacist or apothecary — 薬 (medicine) + 屋 (shop) — and ひとりごと (hitorigoto) means talking to yourself. Fittingly, the heroine Maomao spends a lot of time muttering about poisons.

アオのハコ (Ao no Hako) — Blue Box, Season 2

The sports-and-romance series returned on October 4. ハコ is “box,” written in katakana for style. Katakana for normal words is a common trick in titles — it makes a word look cool, different or a little mysterious.

More returning titles

  • 東京リベンジャーズ (Tōkyō Ribenjāzu), Tokyo Revengers — the Three Titans arc, from October 2
  • らんま1/2 (Ranma Nibun no Ichi), Ranma 1/2 — the third season of the remake, from October 3
  • アオアシ (Aoashi), Season 2 — the soccer series, also from October 4

Anime titles are a great reading workout: kanji, katakana, wordplay and grammar, all in a few characters.

How to read an anime title

Word to know · この単語配信はいしんhaishinstreaming; online distribution

Once you know a few patterns, anime titles start to make sense.

1. The “no” pattern — A の B The particle の (no) works like “’s” or “of”: 薬屋のひとりごと = the apothecary**’s** monologue. アオのハコ = the box of blue. It’s in a huge share of titles.

2. Season numbers — 第○期 Japanese seasons are written 第2期, 第3期 (dai-ni-ki, dai-san-ki). You’ll also see 2nd Season or Season 2 in English. 第 makes ordinal numbers, like “-th” in English.

3. Fractions — 1/2 Ranma 1/2 is read にぶんのいち (nibun no ichi). In Japanese, fractions are read bottom first: “of two parts, one.” Fun fact you can use at the convenience store too: 1/3 is さんぶんのいち.

Japanese fans’ favorite season words
